It is clear from the foregoing discussions that unless these issues are resolved amicably among the various ethnic nationalities, the Nigerian state will continue to experience persistently the threat of secession and the pursuit of separationist agenda.

Methodology

Data for this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were obtained from Interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDS) while the secondary data were obtained from (i) The Guardian Newspaper and (ii) The Tell magazine from 1999-2003. The data were analyzed via simple percentages, content and Z-Y index analysis. Only the Z-Y index analysis is reported here because of the problem of space. The fieldwork was conducted between October 2003 and April 2004.

Location of Study

Both the interview and the FGDs were conducted in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu and Yenogoa. Ten interviews and two FGDs were conducted in each location. The respondents consist of the leaders of the ethnic militias in each location. In Lagos, the leaders of the OPC were interviewed, in Enugu, the leaders of the ‘Bakassi Boys,’ in Kaduna, the leaders of the APC while in Yenogoa the leaders of the ‘Egbesu’ bays were used. The FGDs were conducted on opinion leaders in each location on basis of age. One group made up a people above the age of fifty while the other group consists of people below fifty years. The issues that came up revolve around the national questions and that something is fundamentally wrong with the Nigeria state. The respondents were of the opinion that the national question must be addressed if Nigeria is to get out of the woods.

Discussion of Findings

As presented in Table 14.1, seven factors were identified by our respondents as the main issues in the separationist agenda being pursued by the different ethnic nationalities.
